Raising a toast...

to aspirations!

I have been getting here every now and then, saying a sentence or two super-excitedly and then disappearing. But tonight I just found a few minutes to blog some updates.

About 3 months back I started planning to have an art show since I've never had a formal art opening. In my search, I ended up finding a pretty cool place near where I work (http://antgallery.org/). I had my work displayed there in the month of October! It was fun and the show was successful, with one piece getting sold at the end. I was really happy that my parents could attend the event before they were heading back to India.

More than anything, it was a confidence boost for me, and brought me to this place where I no longer feel my face flush when I'm referred to as an "artist". Yeah, strange how your social role makes a difference to your identity.

Here's the text from my gallery opening invite about the show:

I have always been fascinated by colour and the way colour seems inextricable from the soul of an object in general, and also importantly, from a piece of art. But equally intriguing is black and white (grayscale), which brings about a certain stillness even in images that show fluidity and movement. Indeed, I think it's an interesting exercise to work on depicting both movement and stillness with both black and white and colour.  While black and white has been explored heavily in photography, it hasn't quite been associated with painting.

My journey of exploring this in painting has resulted in a series of pairs of black and white and colour paintings, a collection of works of photo-realism and abstracts.

In this and the next few posts I will share pictures of the paintings, a pair of colour and black and white paintings in each post.

The gallery I was at is an all artist-run non-profit. It's a pretty cool place, and is completely non-juried. So in a sense it's no "accomplishment" since anyone can put anything up, but I enjoyed the process nonetheless, and consider it as a springboard into a world of more such opportunities.

As for other goings-on, I am working on my last course towards my degree in Computational Linguistics! Can't wait to graduate!

Here's the first pair of paintings-

'The Buddha' 9"x 12" Acrylic on Canvas

'Aum' 9"x12" Acrylic on Canvas
(This is the Balinese symbol for Aum)

Congratulations Sumi! That's really exciting! The black & white and color pair theme is really interesting.
I love how you've captured the intense concentration on Buddha's face. Waiting to see your other paintings :).
