Of the body and the spirit...

I missed coffee. Dearly. I stopped having coffee for two reasons: a. I'm trying to go vegan and teas taste a lot better with non-dairy "milk" than coffee, b. I found a correlation between coffee and the health of my skin.

I guess I still do miss coffee, but may be just a little.

I loved the aroma and taste of coffee, not to mention the effect it brought about, i.e., plesant jitters, but I realized what I missed a lot was also the process of making it. For me, just having a cup of coffee in the morning has not meant as much as the whole process of making it and drinking it. It's a ritual that helps me focus and start my day.

So I figured that part of the trick was in keeping the ritual, not getting rid of it, but just changing it, to a tea-making one, from a coffee-making one. I start my day grating ginger, letting it steep into hot water, and then brew a cup of black tea and add whatever milk I want to add to it. Quite refreshing!

The other thing I have been thinking about is ways to stay hydrated. Sometimes when I am absorbed in work I tend to ignore my body signals to drink water. So I figured if I made it a tad more interesting I'd probably drink it. Here's two tricks-

1. Throw in powdered cardamom/saffron, or both, just a little bit, and a squeeze of lime into the water.
2. Add a squeeze of lime and some spearmint.

These are low calorie, healthy, refreshing, and I hope they will get me to drink more water throughout the day. It will take you not more than two minutes to prepare this, just once, in the morning, and then  you just need to refill your glass for every drink.
