There are so many precious kid memories I cannot bear to lose, so I have decided to note them in this blog with the label 'sunnySonny', going forward!
My kindergarten boy's teacher has a 'behavior chart' in class with various levels. Every day all kids start at 'Ready to Learn'. Through the course of the day they can move up/down the (color-coded) chart, down to 'Needing reminders' and then to 'Report to parent' or up to 'Working hard' and then to 'Wow!'. Reaching 'Wow!' at the end of the day means getting a 'WOW!' note:
When I first heard this behavior chart thing I found it hilarious but it's surprising how effective it is! The kids really want to get to 'Wow!'! A couple weeks into the start of his kindergarten when I asked my son if he'd got any 'Wow!'s after the first one, he almost teared up and said "I try so hard but stay at Working Hard'. I also heard a story about his friend who cried when he moved down the chart and the teacher had to tell him it was ok because he forgot, but could move up by remembering to behave!
On a hilarious side note, when our little one visited his aunt (my professor sis's) university classroom, his first question was "Where is the behavior chart?" :-)
Well anyhow, what he does with all the 'Wow!' notes is pretty interesting. He fills them up with colorful doodles. He even tried to give them back to Mrs Wilcox, his teacher but she said she "didn't need them back". My son came back to me mumbling "I wanted her to put them up on the wall". Here are some colored 'Wow!' notes! He even let me color on one of them once. I have told him we will make a collage of 'Wow!'s and put it up in his room.
Recently, he was missing his Pre-K friend Kerem, who moved to California and insisted on sending him a colored 'Wow!' note. He just mailed it out-- you can find it in the above collection! :-)
And here's a quote from yours truly:
"Anyone with the instinct to bring out the soul of the stuff of the mundane, is an artist at heart. The rest is skill."
