The public school system here is quite relaxed. A enjoys it though, because there are always non-academic dimensions to grow in too, like developing social sensibilities, leadership, music, PE etc. He goes to school until 3:00 pm and then goes to an after-school daycare. One thing I am particular about is that he should do math work and reading regularly so that he does not get rusty. Since school is super light, I give him "homework" to do during his after-school hours. I bought a math workbook recently and each day he gets a few pages of exercises to do-- not a mountain of work, but a little each day.
Every day, I mark a "symbol of the day" at the top of the pages he is supposed to work on. Initially I would use (uncreative) symbols like diamond, heart etc. and go, "Today you need to solve the problems on the pages with a diamond", etc...
Then I started asking him, "What symbol would you like for today?"
And slowly the symbols started to get more and more creative: "the letter X", "965", "my name", and then.. "christmas tree", "phone", "garbage can", and yesterday when I asked him, he looked at me for a second and then said "Nose!"
It was hilarious!
He does have the Nose pages to do today!
