This is my latest painting and my biggest so far. It's 2' X 4' and is a bit quirky. I have used the most unimaginable materials:
- Thermocoal
- Wall paint
- Acrylic paint
- Gloss polish
- Alcohol bottles
- Chocolate wrappers
- Copper wire
The theme behind this painting is our different planes of existence. The planes are:
1. The Sense/Pleasure Plane - revelry, enjoyment, merriment, hedonism - this is the bottom most plane in the painting, depicted by the alcohol bottles and the chocolate wrappers and the liberal orange splashes.

2. The Intellectual Plane/Plane of Ideas/Plane of Spirituality - this is depicted by the topmost part of the painting that is blue-purple. The geometric shapes are representative of both math/science & reasoning, as well as the capacity to understand abstractions. If you notice the way the white portion runs into the upper blue part, you will see square waveforms which symbolically represent engineering, a representation of left brain development and technological advancement.

3. The plane in between/the 'Hybrid' Plane - this plane is a combination of the above two planes and involves such fields as music which are largely sensual experiences but at the same time also are intellectual as well as take us to the spiritual dimension. This is (obviously) depicted by the guitar, flaming red with passion.

Which plane do you spend most of your time in? Which plane do you enjoy being in the most?

Fantastic one!
This was one painting that was very clear to me even before reading your explanation. Well depicted.
For me, its (obviously) the hybrid plane that gives the max kick :)
Excellent concept. Also music can be seen as the one that elevates us to the higher plane.
thanks namelessnerd!
Interesting work. Are the proportions supposed to mean anything? It seems like they are all equal in amount.
This was a very anticipated question - the actual size of each plane varies from individual to individual, so no, no attempt was made to depict the extent of each plane based on proportions in the painting since a generalization cannot be made. Hope that made sense.
Wow!.. Awesome depiction!.
So, I enjoi being in the plane of "pleasure" only if it is moderation.
Do you think that applies to the above 2 planes also?

Love the colours, theme, choice of materials - in short, everything about this work is good.
I enjoy being in all of those planes though hedonism comes naturally to me!
On a side note, for your own safety, I hope you made this work in a well ventilated space.

@arvindh
thank you! what do you mean by this-
"On a side note, for your own safety, I hope you made this work in a well ventilated space."
yeah, our house in general is pretty well ventilated I think, but I am interested in knowing exactly how it affects the painting...
wall paint, gloss polish are all harmful if inhaled...
nice.you have come long way.
@arvindh
ah, ok. it's dried at this point. dunno how much I inhaled before that! :-p
@Sowmya
Sorry for the late reply. Yeah the sense plane certainly needs moderation, lesser than the other two planes, in my opinion. The intellectual plane, for instance, needs moderation for a person who is prone to getting burnt out by intense intellectual activity, but it may be fine for a different person... that's what I think...
Very cool Sum! I like the concept, it is very interesting and the work itself looks pleasing..
What were the different shades of blue supposed to imply ?
Dimensions of the intellect.
Thanks for stopping by Vishruth.
